Yesterday I did a free groin flap which I learnt from wonderful results of Dr Ashok Koul. Sir, you shared all your surgeries with us and we learnt from you. And we are teaching them to our students. I am really shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Dr Ashok Koul; I still cannot believe that Dr Koul missed so unexpectedly..Dr koul was such a wonderful person and had always been a great asset to Plastic Surgery. Dr Koul will always be remembered at plastic surgery, NIMS.
We spent so much of time with each other in microvascular lab and procedure time in OT at NIMS and I cannot forgot those days. We enjoyed with each other in NIMS even when he was in Kochi. He was very dynamic and had displayed his challenging personality in learning new things. I am really shocked and not getting any words to show my sorrow on Dr Koul's untimely death.

I knew Dr Ashok Koul for a few years now, and had grown to like and understand him.
He was a epitome of passion for microvascular surgery and contributed immensely in all our teaching programmes and the Plastic Surgery society of Karnataka . He was always willing to come and demonstrate Brachial Plexus surgeries in our OT and discuss with us and our residents. He was never tired of this, teaching. He was a private person but a very thoughtful one. He had lot of dreams for the future and I feel all the young Plastic Surgeons who don't know him have missed a lot.
He would speak to me about my daughter studying in the US as his daughter was too and I learnt a lot on how to deal with this.
Its a huge loss to us and we miss him.

Our friendship started 2 decades back when Ashok was working in Medical Trust hospital Kochi. He from that time looked to me as a plastic surgeon whose thought process and work output of highest standard that was prevalent. He made his mark as microsurgery, when it was in its infancy in our state. He made with his work plastic surgery noticeable in Kerala. Later on our friendship and mutual admiration blossomed greatly . Our field of interest in plastic surgery were different which in fact helped us to learn from each other much more interesting. The meeting s in CAPS Kochi was always memorable as Ashok would come with unimaginably innovative results in in some cases . That too very modestly presented.
His passion in medical teaching brought us more intimate as he always was a part of our programmes. He was excellent teacher who could inspire anyone listening to him. Ashok very briefly to be described by would be that "the most innovative and technically sound plastic surgeon I have known". The void of his loss can't be replaced and APSI has lost one of it's brilliant member and a potential leader.

Dear Dr Ashok
I can't believe I have to write about you on your memory page today.
My hands are trembling and it's raining in my eyes. I can't see, can't think and can't type.
Your sudden departure from this world is the biggest loss to your family, we friends and more importantly your patients. Your brilliance and exemplary surgical skills will be greatly missed at Sparsh Hospital.
I have fond memories of our long discussions during several APSI EXCO meetings. I was looking forward to you becoming the President of our beloved association. I am sure as I write this message, you are watching me with a smile.
Great men never die. Ashok, you have left behind clouds of everlasting memories, which I will cherish throughout my life.

I have known Dr. Ashok Koul since last 17 years. He was a great teacher and talented microsurgeon. Many of our colleagues including myself have learnt from his videos. He was a perfectionist and could think and execute the unthinkable solutions to the problems in plastic surgery. His untimely demise has left us all with a vaccum which can never be filled. May his soul rest in peace and may God give his family strength and courage to withstand his loss.

Your passing was so tragic, shocking & unexpected, leaving a lot of unanswered questions. You were always there for us whenever we needed you.
