"I had known Dr Ashok Raj Koul since 1995 when we finished our MCh ,My teacher Dr Anil Chadha was his examiner and told me that he was one of the brilliant students he had examined ,coming from him that's great compliment rarely dispensed
He was highly ambitious and hard worker diligent and committed
We shared many moments and compared notes often on life mostly professionally of course we also used to meet often earlier when I used to attend conferences diligently when I was working in teaching hospitals
I had not met him since last 10 years since I returned from Hongkong and started private practice ,however I met him in 1st weak of march at a conference in Ahmedabad where I was invited to chair a session,Dr Koul gave a lecture
We met afterwards and shared precious time when we took a selfie as his usual self he had a prom and serious pose I requested him to smile and took another selfie which I had shared in face book
We also discussed about life and ambitions and happiness and I asked him specifically as to has he found what he was looking for ,the answer he gave was no specific and had a hint of inconclusiveness
Then we departed on our ways
It was a shock for me to know from what's up group that he's no more
The last few moments spent together will remain etched on my memory
He was a great friend and highly intelligent and sensitive soul a quiet unassuming guy who went about life in his own inimitable style I don't think we will have another guy like him ever God Bless"

During my residency in plastic surgery i was keen on microvascular surgery and trained from a centre were it was routinely performed. Dr. Ashok Koul' s operative videos on free flaps I think shot very candidly by his residents with a storz light source for extra illumination were a humongous help. He had simplified some parts of the procedure while highlighting the most critical areas. His clarity of thoughts and technical acumen were an inspiration. When the pressure of this rather difficult specialty used to get at me I would watch his videos repeatedly and feel my confidence building up. I happened to talk to him only once over the phone about a work placement with him. He was attentive and polite. His work made me and is continuing to make me help the needy patients. He continues to live in our memories and in the minds of patients we have reached due to him. Long live these memories.

Ashok was a friend for many years, since the mid 1990s. More often than not, we met at conferences in the beginning where we immediately gelled as fellow microsurgeons. With the passage of time, our clinical interests diverged but not the friendship. We often chatted on WhatsApp and exchanged opinions on cases. He was always warm and forthcoming, with definite and sharp opinions but willing to discuss and argue with an open mind. His superb skills and innovativeness as a microsurgeon are well known to all of us. I wish we could have helped him grapple with whatever was distressing him. Our Plastic surgery fraternity has irreplaceably lost a dynamic ethical brilliant mind with sublime surgical skills. I am deeply distressed and dismayed...I have lost a great friend.

Ashok Koul was my junior resident at PGI,Chandigarh. He used to be very outspoken and bubbly. He used to be very choosy with work, not liking to work in Burns. Ultimately he chose microsurgery in which he excelled. He was amazingly innovative and highly scientific in discussions. His contributions to AP Plastic Surgeons WhatsApp group can not be forgotten. With his departure we have lost a great friend. May his soul rest in peace.
